In this time of travel restrictions and empty store shelves, I made this solid cherry wood keychain as a reminder to look for the silly and ridiculous things in life. This would be an amusing gift for someone stuck at home sheltering in place, or for someone that was surprised to find the TP shelves empty at their local grocery store.
The wood piece measures approximately 2.75" x 0.5" and is about 3/16 inches thick and it is protected with a hand-rubbed oil finish. The cherry wood is sourced from street trees in the western Michigan area that have been removed due to construction or storm damage -- not their timber value. After I pick out the rough lumber I personally process it through a long series of planing and sawing steps to produce wood that is made exactly to my specifications, which I then laser cut into the final shape. While it is more effort than buying birch plywood or alder wood, it is totally worth it. The warm depth and richness of solid cherry wood is completely natural, and because it is sourced from salvaged street trees it is also sustainable!
Because wood is a natural material, there is some variation in the wood grain and color therefore no two keychains will ever be exactly alike. Several example keychains are shown in the pictures to illustrate the different possible appearances of cherry hardwood.

Utilizing yard trees for wood is one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable ways to source lumber as it does not contribute to deforestation or environmental destruction. It also gives a positive outcome for trees that are lost due to disease, pests, or construction, and gives additional positive value to the urban forest. Making a conscious decision to purchase products made from urban wood is a way of showing support for the urban forest and local craftsman.
