Custom Braille Necklace - Braille Jewelry - Braille Pendant - Personalized Braille

This is a necklace that is custom made out of urban cherry wood. The wood is sourced from a sawmill in western Michigan that produces lumber exclusively using street trees that have been removed due to construction or storm damage. I strongly believe in what they do and my dream is to open a similar operation myself!

The necklace charm measures approximately 2 inches by 3/8 inch. The braille is raised and is readily felt, it should be noted though that the best results are from keeping the number of characters as small as possible, and under 10 is best. I can do larger numbers but the legibility will be lessened. The Braille language that I use is the Unified English Braille Code. The chain is antique style bronze, and is available in several lengths.

The wood has not been dyed or stained or painted. It looks so much darker than my other cherry items because of the process I use to make the raised dots which essentially burns away the top layer of wood everywhere except the dots, which caramelizes the natural sugars in the wood. It also jump starts the natural darkening process that affects all cherry wood.

The wood is protected with a food safe hand rubbed oil finish.

The necklace is also available in a couple of other forms which can be found on my shop page. It is available in identical fashion as this but from walnut wood or reclaimed redwood. I can also make it as a keychain, and I can also make it with the dots totally cut through the wood. Having the dots cut all the way through gives it a unique visual appeal, but it is not readily felt and is thus not suitable for someone who is blind.

The necklace comes by default in a gift box as shown in the last picture. It can also be upgraded to an additional necklace charm which gives it a unique appearance reminiscent of a tassel, which I've been told is very stylish.

Utilizing yard trees for wood is one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable ways to source lumber as it does not contribute to deforestation or environmental destruction. It also gives a positive outcome for trees that are lost due to disease, pests, or construction, and gives additional positive value to the urban forest. Making a conscious decision to purchase products made from urban wood is a way of showing support for the urban forest and local craftsman.
